Awards and Scholarships

The Waikato Graduate Women Educational Trust, Te Ohu Tuku Tohu o ngā Raukura Wāhine Mātauranga o Waikato, offers awards and scholarships to women students and staff at Waikato and Bay of Plenty tertiary institutions.

Some awards are available to women in tertiary institutions throughout the region while others are available only to students from a particular institution.

Bay of Plenty and Waikato Tertiary Institutions

Dame Jocelyn Fish Award

Available to

Women students at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, the University of Waikato, and the Waikato Institute of Technology, who are studying in a non-traditional field for women.

Purpose

To assist women students enrolled in Waikato or Bay of Plenty tertiary institutions, who are majoring in a non-traditional field for women.

Dr Vivienne Cassie-Cooper Award

Available to

Women returning to full-time or part-time study at at Bethlehem Tertiary Institute, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology, the University of Waikato, and the Waikato Institute of Technology.

Purpose

To enable women returning to study (full-time or part-time) after a period in the paid or voluntary workforce or caring for family, to enrol for and complete a Masters degree.

University of Waikato

Doctoral Study Merit Award

Available to

Women students enrolled full-time for a PhD at the University of Waikato and whose doctoral enrolment has been confirmed within 12 months prior to the closing date.

Purpose

To provide assistance to women students, enrolled full-time for a PhD at the University of Waikato.

Women students, who are enrolled full-time or part-time at the University of Waikato for a thesis worth at least 90 points towards a Masters degree.

Engineering Prize

Women students at the University of Waikato in their third year of study towards an engineering degree.

Purpose

To recognise the most outstanding woman student in her third year of study towards an engineering degree. The School of Engineering selects the nominee.

Te Raranga Mātauranga Award

Available to

Māori women students enrolled full-time at the University of Waikato in the final year of a first undergraduate degree.
Each Division will be invited to nominate two candidates for the Award each year. Individual students who are not nominated by their Division cannot apply.

Purpose

To assist Māori women students enrolled full-time at the University of Waikato in the final year of a first undergraduate degree.

Emmy Noether Prize in Mathematics

Available to

Woman students in their first year of study at the University of Waikato, enrolled in at least one paper offered by the Department of Mathematics.

Purpose

To recognise the most outstanding first year woman student in mathematics for the year. The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences selects the nominee.

Elizabeth Bisley Memorial Prize in English

Available to

Women or men students in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waikato who have completed at least 60 points in English at 500 level.

Purpose

To recognise the best graduate student of the year in English. The prize winner is selected by the Head of English.

Te Matau o Kiwa Prize

Available to

Māori or Pacific women students in year 3 of a bachelor programme delivered by Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao - Faculty of Māori & Indigenous Studies.

Purpose

To recognise the woman student committed to her study and making a contribution to the Faculty and the wider community. The Faculty selects the nominee.

Wintec | Te Pūkenga Postgraduate Study Award

Women students enrolled at Wintec | Te Pūkenga in the final year of a first postgraduate qualification lasting the equivalent of one full-time year or longer

Purpose

To support women students enrolled at Wintec | Te Pūkenga in the final year of a first postgraduate qualification lasting the equivalent of one full-time year or longer.
